90’s Plus Tea

90's Tea 2007 Photo1

On Thursday, August 23rd, we honored the 13 Hilltop residents who are 90 or above (three are over 100). The honorees invited their family and friends and along with other Hilltop residents and staff, we celebrated their lives and the vitality and wisdom they bring to our community.

The tables were beautifully appointed with flowers arranged by our office manager, Tracy Hildabrand, and our chef, Dan Davis, produced a beautiful offering of finger sandwiches, quiches, fruit tarts and assorted desserts, chocolate-dipped strawberries and cookies.

It was a wonderful occasion and we are always amazed and delighted at the lives of lovely people who are such vivid examples of lives well lived.

Annual Art Show 2007

Art Show 2007

On April 26, 2007, the residents presented their creative efforts for us all to enjoy at the 8th Annual Art Show. Residents gathered at 2:00 p.m. to hear members of the writing class share their articles. We heard about our 100-year old resident's trip across the United States in a train when she was five, a poem about the "Emerald City," a poem about one writer's experiences on a Metro bus ride and a personal story of a resident's spiritual experience.

Residents Art Work

The activity room became an art gallery with quilts, photography, scrapbooks, handwork, paper collage, oils, and watercolors. Some of the participants have studied art professionally; some have practiced art most of their lives and others have had his/her first exposure to art in the Seniors Making Art classes here at Hilltop. The willingness to share their creativity with the rest of us is very much appreciated.

Our Chef's Great Buffet

The festive occasion was completed with a sumptuous hors d'oeuvers buffet prepared by the chef and staff.

We would like to share one of the poems by Maro Kentros:

Emerald City

Ferries flirt in the fog
Druids dance on their drums
To warn the sirens in their path;
Ferry howling like a wolf
My voice is smothered by the warlord's blare.

Shrouds of rain drown Ariel's song
Despair is the moment
For we cannot see the Sun
sail through the horizon

Tears flow freely
as I suckle the cherry-blossomed air
Pink petals strewn on bridal ground
Ying and Yank caress The Sound
As Beauty and Darkness wed

In the stillness of the Sound
The Sun is growing all around
As ferries weave through its shimmering threads
A pastel city floats through emerald beds

All is the moment.
